In light of the various corruption risks, good governance of the extractives sector is therefore essential for the successful development of countries with large natural resources endowments.

There are many examples of good practice from developed and emerging economies that have helped mitigate the risks of corruption along the extractives value chain. This demonstrates that the so-called “resource curse” is not inevitable. Importantly, research also shows that many innovative practices also arise directly in developing countries, although challenges in implementation exist.

It has been well-established that the extractive sector is more prone to poor governance corruption. In this episode, we are going take a closer look at corruption trends in the extractive sector. In the first part of the discussion, we will focus on the corruption risks applicable across the extractive sector decision chain. In the second part, we will mention a few case studies from different countries, that demonstrate corruption in its various forms.

The political economy of natural resources underscores the importance of institutions in order to manage natural resources for sustainable development. In this episode, we will turn our attention to the political analysis of resource governance. There is no shortage in the media of how natural resources shape international politics, so we will mostly confine our discussion to the national level within given resource-rich countries. We will talk about various ways natural resources affect politics and well also some of the effects that natural resource wealth has on a particular country.
